Become a Heritage Volunteer

The Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area  now has a Heritage Volunteer program. This is an ambassador program that educates volunteers in the rich history, culture, and recreation opportunities within our three counties of Alamosa, Conejos, and Costilla. Volunteers provide interpretation and expertise to the public through our programs, events, and museums. Training is provided to all new volunteers, no previous experience necessary.

Heritage volunteers  lead community events, teacher workshops, seminars, guided tours, and other activities. They also create professional documentation of Heritage Area resources and enhance heritage tourism opportunities.

Some examples of what past volunteers have done is listed below:

Heritage Volunteers help to greet visitors at the Conejos County Museum and Visitor Center in Antonito. In this volunteer position you will have the opportunity to share with visitors all the wonderful things there is to do and learn about in the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area. You will have the opportunity to educate visitors and locals about the unique history of the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area.

Heritage Volunteers can speak to local youth and the community.  Volunteers tell stories about their historical or cultural preservation work, family history, ethnic traditions, agricultural work, or culture. These opportunities come during our summer camps, during the school year at various school districts, through participating in our oral history project, giving private tours, and at community events.  Send us an email inquiring about upcoming opportunities and to let us know you are interested in volunteering.

Heritage Volunteers help to professional document heritage area resources. The Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area recently gained access to a digital scanner and we are in need of volunteers to help us scan and archive our historic documents and images. You could volunteer a few minutes or a few hours of your time, at your convenience during our business hours. These documents will assist local teachers in creating place-based curriculum. They will also assist researchers conduction research on various topics within our heritage area. At times these documents will be available to the public as well. Other volunteers assist in archaeology projects, historical preservation projects, or asset mapping projects.

Heritage Volunteers help at our community events, with our booth at the summer festivals, to provide food or drinks for an event, or assist in handing out brochures and giveaways for community outreach .  Teach cultural dancing, cultural music, or other cultural skills. We are always seeking volunteers to help us create decorations, decorate, set up, or clean up at our various community events throughout the year.

We value every volunteer with our organization. For us your volunteer contribution helps in many ways. Please send us an email to ask us about upcoming volunteer opportunities, and volunteer trainings, by emailing us at  info@sdcnha.org
